Puzzle Rag – Violin/Cello/Piano

Puzzle Rag 2014

A work for Violin, Cello, (optional Double Bass) and Piano. This was written as a film score to accompany a short silent film from the 1920s. It was performed as part of the Darwin Fringe Festival by the Ad Hoc Ensemble (Vln: Netanela Mizrahi, Cello: Rebecca Harris, Double Bass: Dan Davies, and Cathy directing from the piano). Premiered July 19th, 2014 at Brown’s Mart Theatre.

The film was made by the avant garde German director Paul Leni, and was one of his 8 puzzle films. These films were designed to be shown in two parts, before and after the main feature – the clues being given in the first part and the solutions in the second. The Puzzle Rag was played in 2 parts live while the the film was projected.
